Summary: The article addresses the coming to power in the Frankish kingdom of Clovis and investigates the differences in the description of this period between Gregory of Tours and the Byzantine historian Procopius of Caesareia. It focuses on a long-time controversy rooted in the profoundly different interpretations of the establishment of the Frankish power in Gaul captured in the works of these above historians. The autor addresses this problem by trying to investigate in detail the context in which these descriptions of the early Frankish kingdom were written and suggests that the main difference comes in the historians´ attitude to the relationship between the Frankish kingdom and the Mediterranean. While Procopius sought to emphasize the integration of the Franks into the latter, Gregory of Tours, on the other hand relying on the "universal ecclesiastical history" genre, that had become common in Late Antiquity, attempted to emphasize the uniqueness of the Frankish Kingdom and its origin in the forceful capture of northern Gaul by the first Merovingian kings.
